Piemont / Savoie

Savoy and Piedmont : 800 years of shared history.

The dynasty of the Savoy House began around the year 1000; first the Savoy County was created and in 1416, it became a Duchy.
Geographically, it includes Savoie, Haute-Savoie (current departments), Piedmont, Liguria, Sardinia and Nice.
Basically the possessions of the Dukes of Savoie are mostly the French side of the Alps: Savoy, Pays de Gex and  Canton de Vaud, Bugey and Nice.
But gradually the Savoy will win the Italian side territories; in 1419 all of Piedmont is part of Savoy.
The capital is transferred from Chambery to Torino in 1562 and the area of influence of Savoy  will switch on the Italian side.
In 1720, the Savoy Duchy became the Kingdom of Sardinia with the integration of Sardinia.
Then in 1815, Genoa is integrated to the Kingdom.

Note that this year, the Duchy will lose the Swiss communes (Carouge, Bernex, Lancy, etc.) that are given to create the Geneva Canton.
Finally, in 1860, the unification of Italy is made with the help of France. In return, the Savoy House will lose Savoy, annexed (in a "more or less" law) by France.
